THE TASK: WATERPROOFING THE BASEMENT PARKING AND TWO LIFT SHAFTS.
THE CHALLENGE:
The Hurlingham location provided a difficult waterproofing challenge because there is a lot of stagnant underground water in that location. The confined space in the lift shaft also meant that only 2 people could work inside the lift shaft at any particular time. The depth of the basement also provided a challenge as the floor level of the basement was below the level of existing drains and the ground water table.
In addition to this, we discovered the floor slab was chipping off gradually due to abrasion from moving vehicles. That was a sign that the concrete floor slab surface was not hard enough to withstand abrasion and impact.
THE SOLUTION:
Our strategy was to waterproof the basements and lift shafts first by applying PENETRON INTEGRAL CAPILLARY SYSTEM on the concrete walls and floor slab. Spots where ground water could be seen physically flowing into the basement and lift shafts were plugged using PENEPLUG RAPID SETTING COMPOUND.
Another 100mm thick layer of concrete was cast on top of the existing floor slab. The new concrete was treated with PENETRON INTEGRAL CAPILLARY SYSTEM to make it water tight. We also treated the new concrete floor slab with PENESEAL FH CONCRETE DENSIFICATION FORMULA to improve the abrasion and impact resistance of the floor slab, or in simpler terms, to harden the concrete.
