The Problem and Challenge
For this job, the problem that the client faced was that the suspended parking lot was leaking down to the basement. Cars parked in the basement were always wet with patches of paint. Furthermore the basement always had a foul smell because of the constant dampness. In short, the leakage was causing serious damages.
Initially, the client had done some rescreeding several times but it was still leaking. The client had also tried to put asphalt, then screed on top but it still leaked. We therefore agreed on some basics- the asphalt would be removed and we would cast a new reinforced concrete slab (of 150mm) on top. This is because:-
The Solution
The choice of material that we would select for this application was the most important decision we had to make. We needed to provide a solution that would cover the following important objectives:
With those factors in consideration, we settled for Masterseal Traffic 1500– a Polyurethane Waterproofing System that is specifically designed for vehicular and pedestrian traffic-bearing areas.
Masterseal Traffic 1500 is suitable for a wide range of applications for multi-storey and underground or suspended car parks. The system is designed to meet the needs of both newly built and refurbishment projects. These include: Parking Garages and Parking Decks. Other areas that Master Traffic 1500 can be used include Stadiums, Balconies, , Commercial Construction, Building and Restoration, Plaza deckstop decks and exposed areas.
Available in 4 standard colors ( gray, charcoal gray, tan and dark tan), the system offers a variety of qualities such as slip resistance, impact resistance, abrasion resistance and elastomeric waterproofing qualities to cope with the daily rigors of constant vehicular traffic.
We therefore proceeded with casting a new RC slab first. Of course we had to remove the existing substrates first, then cast.
We then proceeded to cast the reinforced concrete (class 30)
We cured the new concrete for a month. Now the new substrate was ready for the Master Traffic to be applied.
This is how the suspended packing bay looks like now:
