Swimming pool waterproofing for a commercial development in Westlands, Nairobi.

THE TASK: WATERPROOFING REPAIRS TO A PARTIALLY SUSPENDED SWIMMING POOL

The Challenge

Most high end residential homes and apartments usually have a swimming pool.  It makes sense since Kenya is a tropical country (with most days of the year having the sun). Plus, having a swimming pool adds a touch of elegance and class for the property.

Over 70%of swimming pools are built below the ground. Why? Because it is the easiest and most conventional way of constructing swimming pools. However, situations arise whereby a swimming pool has to be built on top of another structure, say at the roof top. Such kind of pools are referred to as suspended swimming pools.

Suspended swimming pools take advantage of vertical space but on the other hand require both unique and precise construction techniques and careful selection of concrete waterproofing solutions. It is in the choosing of waterproofing solutions that most architects, engineers, Quantity Surveyors and contractors blunder.  Mau West Waterproofing Solution’s concrete waterproofing chemicals are crystalline-meaning  the waterproofing chemicals cause microscopic, water-blocking crystals to seal pores and hairline fractures.

In this case, we repaired a leaking suspended swimming pool located in Westlands, Nairobi, Kenya. The  floor slab, and walls were leaking causing the room underneath, which was meant to be a store, totally unusable. The real estate agents this high-end property decided to come to us for a solution. The mission was simple-the suspended pool to be watertight and resistant to cracks and leaks.

The Solution

Our strategy was to waterproof the concrete walls first the n the floor slab after. We applied our ten year guaranteed PENETRON INTEGRAL CAPILLARY WATERPROOFING SYSTEM on the concrete walls and floor slab. Spots which were ejecting  water were plugged using PENEPLUG.

Next, we applied PENECRETE MORTAR WATERPROOFING SYSTEM round the lights of the pool and all the  other protruding outlets such as pipes and water jets.

We finally tested the pool to make sure there was leakage. After that we returned the tiles and other finishes

FEATURED PRODUCTS
Penetron A surface-applied, integral crystalline waterproofing material, PENETRON is used for waterproofing and chemical protection at above and below ground level. PENETRON is applied by brush or spray to either the positive or the negative side of the concrete and in the presence of moisture penetrates deeply into the structure. The ensuing chemical reaction fills microcracks, pores and capillaries with an insoluble crystalline formation, which prevents water and water-borne chemicals from entering, even under high hydrostatic pressure. Cracks that develop during the lifetime of the concrete are resealed by PENETRON, resulting in permanent concrete protection.
Peneplug A rapid-setting, crystalline-based, cementitious compound designed to stopping active leaks even under high hydrostatic pressure. PENEPLUG is recommended as a waterproof plugging mortar or where rapid-setting is required.
Penecrete Mortar Used in combination with PENETRON for filling non-moving cracks and construction joints, form-tie holes, honey-combed areas and structurally damaged concrete. PENECRETE MORTAR consists of Portland cement, very fine treated silica sand and various active, proprietary chemicals. It is applied in laminated layers to areas that have been opened and cut-back to sound concrete for repair to provide protection against water ingress
