The Challenge

 Cheap and poor quality waterproofing materials were the root cause of the leakage. Poor workmanship of the tank also contributed to the leakages of the tank.

George Massay, a fellow with the Christian Brothers, as frustrated by how the tank was losing water from the underground concrete tank. The waterproofing products that were used to waterproof the tank were not known, nor explained to the client how they work. Christian Brothers found their tank was having leaks which, apart from losing water, was leading to high water bills.

Christian Brothers were referred to us by reputable companies and when the opportunity came up to evaluate and inspect their water tank, we were more than happy to offer our expertise and solutions.

The Evaluation

Mau West Co. Waterproofing Solutions inspected the tank and we found out that there was indeed a lot of work to be done. At the time of inspection, water from outside was leaking heavily inside the tank.

The construction joints on the wall were not waterproofed, as well as the construction joint between the wall and the floor slab. Both joints had visible signs of dampness, indicating that water was passing through the joints.

The floor slab was also poorly concreted. During hacking, we noticed several areas where the floor was weak.

The Solution

Considering the council water is rationed in South C, the client could not afford not to store water during the few days per week that water is available. Due to these challenges, the client’s decision came down to choosing MAU WEST CO. WATERPROOFING SOLUTIONS.

All the honey combs present in the concrete wall were repaired using a combination of PENETRON & PENECRETE MORTAR. In areas where the honey combs were too severe, we laid concrete, instead of normal mortar. After that, we applied PENETRON INTEGGRAL CAPILLARY SYSTEM on the concrete wall.

The floor slab was also not well concreted. During hacking we discovered most areas of the floor were weak-  therefore we decided to lay another concrete slab of 100mm thickness (class 30). We later treated the floor slab with PENETRON INTEGRAL CAPILLARY SYSTEM.

After treating the wall and the floor slab with PENETRON INEGRAL CAPPILARY SYSTEM, we laid and cured plaster and screed (ratio of 1:3).
